1. Introduction
As we celebrate the 10th issue of our 'Weekly AI' newsletter, I'm writing to you from Heathrow Airport in London. As I sit here, savoring a cup of British tea and watching planes take off, I'm excited to bring you another edition filled with fascinating insights into the world of artificial intelligence.
In this issue, I've decided to delve into a topic that has been capturing my interest lately - the intersection of longevity and AI. It's a subject that's as intriguing as it is promising, and I believe we stand on the brink of an exciting future in this field. This perspective might seem paradoxical, especially considering the prevalent narrative that artificial general intelligence (AGI) could spell the end of humanity. However, I invite you to explore this topic with an open mind and a sense of curiosity.
But before we dive into the intricacies of longevity and AI, I'd like to start with a topic that has been a source of personal fascination - the evolution of artistic creativity in the realm of AI. This week, I've been captivated by the work of Pindar Van Arman and his creation, CloudPainter.
CloudPainter is not just a painting robot; it's an exploration into the depths of creativity, a journey into understanding the artistic process, and a testament to the capabilities of artificial intelligence. When Van Arman began his journey fifteen years ago, his machines were capable of only simple tasks, such as connecting dots and painting by numbers. But as technology advanced, so did CloudPainter.
Today, CloudPainter uses deep learning neural networks, artificial intelligence, feedback loops, and computational creativity to make a surprising amount of independent aesthetic decisions. It's not just a tool that assists in the creation of art; it's a creative entity in its own right.
Van Arman's machines have grown beyond being simple assistants. They are now effectively augmenting their own creativity, as well as exhibiting creativity of their own. They have become a generative AI art system so sophisticated that it has forced Van Arman to consider the possibility that all art is generative.
The journey of CloudPainter is documented in the AI Art Blog, with posts dating back as far as twelve years ago. The gallery showcases the recent work of Van Arman and his AI, a testament to the evolution of their creative process. The process page provides a brief description of the most recent creative AI algorithm, offering a glimpse into the intricate workings of this unique art system.
CloudPainter's journey is not just about creating art; it's about deconstructing the artistic process and teaching it to machines. It's about understanding creativity on a deeper level and pushing the boundaries of what we consider art. It's about exploring the intersection of technology and creativity, and the results are nothing short of fascinating.
As we delve into the rest of this issue, featuring our regular sections' GM of the Week' and 'The Art of Life Through the Eyes of AI - Week 22 Summary,' I hope you find the exploration of these topics as intriguing and thought-provoking as I do. Here's to another week of discovery and learning in the ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.
2. What caught my attention in the AI World this week: “AI SHOULD Run Your Life.”
Life, as we know it, is a journey marked by the relentless passage of time. As we age, we become more acutely aware of this reality, and our reactions to it vary greatly. For me, this awareness sparked an "aha" moment, leading me to delve into the fascinating realm of longevity, healthy diet, exercise, and other related aspects. My curiosity didn't stop there; I found myself intrigued by the potential role of artificial intelligence (AI) in extending our lives. The question that lingered in my mind was whether AI represented an inevitable annihilation of humanity or whether it could be a "magic pill" for longevity.
In my quest for answers, I stumbled upon an incredibly controversial video. Titled "Bryan Johnson Thinks AI SHOULD Run Your Life," the video features Bryan Johnson, the founder, and CEO of Blueprint, a company committed to optimizing health and longevity through algorithmic precision. Johnson's vision for the future of human health and society, particularly the role of AI in shaping it, is thought-provoking, albeit contentious.
Johnson argues that algorithms surpass human capability in managing our own well-being. He even goes as far as to say, according to his perspective, that "the mind is dead," implying that the traditional way of thinking and making decisions is becoming obsolete in the face of advanced algorithms. He proposes a thought experiment: if an algorithm could provide near-perfect health, would people be willing to follow its protocol, even if it means giving up their own choices about what to eat or when to sleep?
However, had I watched this presentation without the commentary from the "Lifespan News" host, I likely would have stopped watching after a few minutes. The host's critique of Johnson's worldview, while appreciating the pioneering efforts of Blueprint in the realm of anti-aging, provides a balanced perspective. The discussion delves further into the potential impact and philosophical considerations of advanced AI on human life and society, questioning the alignment of AI and humans, the potential loss of human agency in favor of AI decision-making, and how to reconcile with AI advancement.
In conclusion, while Johnson's views are controversial, they do provoke thought and discussion about the future of AI in our lives, particularly in the realm of health and longevity. As we continue to explore the potential of AI, it's crucial to consider all perspectives and strive for a future where technology enhances our lives rather than dictating them.
In this ever-evolving world of technology, staying informed and engaging in meaningful discussions about the future we want to shape is crucial. I encourage you to watch the video for yourself, absorb the perspectives presented, and form your own opinions. The video titled "Bryan Johnson Thinks AI SHOULD Run Your Life" is indeed a thought-provoking piece that challenges our conventional thinking about AI and its role in our lives.
So, I invite you to watch the video, ponder over the ideas presented, and join the conversation.
Let's discuss the potential of AI in the realm of health and longevity.
What are your thoughts on Bryan Johnson's vision?
Do you see AI as a threat or a tool for enhancing our lives?
How do you envision the future of AI in our pursuit of longevity?
Remember, every voice matters in shaping the future. Your perspective could be the catalyst for a new idea or solution. So, let's start the discussion!
